I am trying to decide whether to carry a Super Blackhawk .44 mag. with 3.75 inch barrel or a Magnum Research .454 Casull with 5 inch barrel as grizzly repellant flyfishing the Rockies. At the moment I am thinking either would be loaded with 300 grain or heavier hard cast lead bullets,etc.The diameter of a .357 Magnum cartridge is 0.357 inches (9.0678 millimeters). The diameter of a 10mm Auto cartridge is 0.4 inches (10.16 millimeters). The .357 Magnum cartridge has a smaller diameter than the 10mm Auto cartridge by 0.043 inches. The overall length of a cartridge determines how deep a bullet will sit in a case.Forgoing hollow-point ammo, good 45 fmj bullets will penetrate around 25 inches into soft tissue. Add to that course hair, bear hide, and heavy tissue muscles, it often comes down to around 20 inches. Hit a rib on the way in and you’ll get a couple of inches less. Some bullets do offer a bit more penetration than others.

The key being “hit,” misses don’t count and a non-vital hit won’t stop the charge no matter what you’re shooting. The primary appeal of the 10mm is that it gives adequate bullet weight and velocity- but with double or triple the number of shots vs a revolver. In my one and only bear encounter, I fired 8 rounds of 10mm in about 2 seconds.

The 41 magnum can be loaded much hotter; I've seen loadings exceeding 1400 ft-lbs, while the 10mm really can't be loaded much hotter.A G20 is a lot to carry around for extended periods of hiking. A G29 is a little more compact if you want to stick with 10mm. It’s mostly a feel good thing anyway, as black bear attacks in NH are virtually non-existent as black bears run from humans. Only other larger animal is a moose and again moose attacks are extremely rare.
